More Jolly Rogers !

VF-84 were among the first squadrons to take the F-4 Phantom to sea, and also among the first squadrons to trade the B-models for J-models (in 1969). This is a rendition of one of those early J-models (notice the lack of ECM antenna on the intake). This is how the squadrons aircraft appeared in 1970 while deployed aboard USS Roosevelt (CVA-42) while operating in the Med. All good things…

In 1979 most fighter squadrons in the us navy was replacing their F-4 Phantom with F-14 Tomcats. With the introduction of the multirole Tomcat not only the Fighter mission was taken over by the F-14, also the photo recce mission was could be fulfilled by the Tomcats TARPS pod which came into service in 1981. While the VFP squadrons remained in service until the mid-80s the heavy photo recce squadrons was being phased out of service in the late 70s, partially due to the fact that their mission was being replaced by the TARPS pods but also due to the size of the aircraft they were flying. The last deployment ever of a RVAh squadron was RVAH-7s deployment aboard USS Ranger (CVA-61) that ended on Sep. 22nd, 1979. The black noses of their squadrons aircraft commemorate the fact that the Vigilante would no longer be deployed aboard a aircraft carrier. Aussie Pig !

It´s been way too long since my last F-111 and i thought it was about time to do something about that. So here´s a F-111C "Pig" of the RAAf as it appeared in 1986. This aircraft served with the 6 sqn. I´m working on establishing a RAAF section, but i only need to add a few more Aussie aircraft to my site before doing so. Which once should be a part of that section you think ? Here´s a few detail shots:

Red-Striped Rascal

I thought it was about time for a century series classic, and while browsing through my files i came across this aircraft, which proved too good not to depict. This aircraft was stationed at Misawa AB in Japan while serving with the 4th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. The 4th operated Deuces from 1960 to 1965 and the squadron commanders aircraft was this jet, adorned with three red stripes across the fuselage, giving rise to the name "Red-Striped Rascal". How do you like it ? To be taken to the USAf section click the image below: F-102A Delta Dagger, 39th Air Division, 4th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, 1961
